I am planning on changing the impeller on my 88 Classic 50 Merc tomorrow. I know nothing about this. Any tips - do's and don'ts?
My S/N is 0B306352. They sold me p/n 47-89983T - Sound right?

Are there any websites to get a diagram of the motor from?
Sorry for all the questions.
Any help is apprecited!

nice motor, its not so hard, ill give you some pointers followed by an exploded diagram

1. remove lower unit (find and remove all the bolts securing it)
2. remove pump housing, maybe take a few pics to help you for re-assembling parts later
3. replace your gaskets/ water pump impeller and you set the impeller by rotating the driveshaft CLOCKWISE
4 re-install the pump housing and then your lower unit, make sure you line up your water tube guide with your water tube

sorry if my answers are a little quick and non descriptive im heading out in a few minutes but any more questions post them on here and ill help you out along the way

A couple of tips:

1.) Add some dish soap to the inside of your impeller housing when installing the impeller - helps it slide in.
2.) Don't get upset if it takes awhile to get the splines on the lower unit shaft to line up with the motor driveshaft. Having a buddy really helps here to nudge the flywheel while you push the lower unit up to help line the splines up.

The rule of thumb on re-installing the lower unit is: it will always go all the way except that last 1/2" and when you are about to cuss at it and give up it will slide into place.....
