changing impeller

being a newbe both here and at boat engine repair i'm sorry for boring anyone with this question. have a '54 7.5 Evinrude that i think i should change the impeller on. Q: is this a straight forward job? do i simply remove the four bolts, drop the shaft do the change and reassemble in reverse? also i do not see a housing gasket in the kit, so what's up there? Also, next week i am picking up a '57 18 hp Evinrude, do these to have an impeller or an actual water pump? thanks in advance for you time and replies

Pretty Simple job. Just drop your lower and the pump is there.

If you dont mind do the whole pump if you want to keep it cheap replace the impeller. I am not really familar with that old of a motor so someone else will chime in here.

What a hoot. Thanks for providing the laugh of the day.

Now back to your 7.5. You have to remove the powerhead on that one to get at and disconnect the shift rod. While you are getting parts for it also get a new gasket for the powerhead, and a new gasket 303355, and oring 303347 for the carbon seal. Don't buy an impeller till you inspect the rest of the pump. The housing may be worn out too. In that case, buy a complete pump kit which includes a new housing. You have to get that one from a dealer.

The 18 is similar except you don't have to pull the powerhead. Shift rod is disconnected through a plate on the side of the midsection on that one.

The video was awesome! I had a heck of a time when I did my impeller and it was funny to see a professional have the same issues. I with I had "Ron" when I was doing mine!!!

I'm not impressed by the video's installation of the impeller, but I guess a mercury mechanic (the name on his hat) may do it differently.

I ususally install the impeller key on the shaft, then insert the impeller into the pump housing setting it in the right direction for rotation, after putting a little Vaselene on the impeller vaners. Then slide the housing with the impeller installed onto the shaft. This will locate the impeller in it's eccentric condition. Then just slide the housing down the shaft & align the key with the impeller slot & bolt it in place.
