Did you disconnect the shift rod? Look on the side of the midsection for a cover held on by two screws. Remove the cover. The shift rod connecting link is behind the cover. Remove on bolt from the link and pull the lower unit off. Some guys like to remove the lower link bolt and some like to pull the upper bolt and take the link out with the lower unit. This will let you pry the link apart a little which makes reassembly easier.<br /><br />EDIT: Was this what you were looking for?
