Re: changing long to short shaft

It depends on the make, model, and year of the motor.

With my 12' tinny with a 9.9 longshaft I didn' bother - runs just fine - could run better with a short shaft but not woth the bother to me.

Re: changing long to short shaft

When I was shopping for my motor on e-bay, I noticed several incomplete conversions for sale, all in various stages of disassembly. If I couldn't make the long shaft work in my application, I would sell it and get something that would work rather than take it apart.

Re: changing long to short shaft

On the fifties and sixties Johnnyrudes, the conversion from longshaft to shortshaft was easy. You needed a new short driveshaft and a shift rod connector. You then removed the midsection extension, driveshaft cover, and water tube extensions, and installed the new driveshaft (simply pull out from the gearcase) and shift rod connector.
