i changed the lower unit oil on my L drive 125 the other day. when i pulled the original oil out it wasnt that milky, more black then anything. i put fresh stuff in and tighted all screws, didnt replace the washers cause i dont know where to get them. i went out today to check on something and noticed dribble coming out of the shift pivot screw. my manual says DO NOT REMOVE so i am not going to. but i was wondering a few things. i am changing the oil again. i was wondering

1. can i tighten this screw as it may be loose without affecting anything?
2. where can i get teh seals to replace the ones that are behind the vent adn fill screw?
3. how can i remove the shift pivot and replace the washer or whatever behind it if need be without hurting anything?

Re: changing lower unit gear oil

Part number 29 for the drain and fill screw washers and part 31 for the pivot screw washer. These part numbers will work at any merc dealer.
Ldrive gear housing
If you have the lower unit off and laying flat on its side you should be able to remove the pivot screw. Tightening it wont hurt nothing but do not put so much pressure on it that it strips the head.

I don't know if anyone has tried this or if it would work. As a temp. fix, what about filling the pivot screw area with RTV for the season.

Re: changing lower unit gear oil

First time working on a L-Drive......went to drain the gear oil on the lower unit and pulled out the Pivot Pin instead....BAD MISTAKE!!!! has anyone figured out how to get the shift Cam back into alignment on the shaft? I have the lower unit off.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thank You
