I've got a 2004 Merc. 50 ELPTO. I run it about once a week. How often should I change my lower unit oil and what is the best thing to use. is regular old 80w-90 god or do I need something else. Would now be a good time to do a first decarb too?? Thanks!!

Doesn't matter what kind of motor you have.......change the lower unit oil at the end of each season. That's the best way to find out if your seals are holding.

Get a proper marine gearbox oil from a dealer.
You can't just put regular oil in, as you don't want it foaming up in your gear box.
Also check as yours is a later model O/B, you might have to use the newer gear oil specs.

Stiper

Just curious.. Do you notice with your new motor, that the pee-er tends to block up easy and needs a bit of a clear out with a bit if weed eater line? This,I think comes from Low pressure/high volume water pumps that they are now using.
My new Mariner is used in an area that has a bit of seaweed and mud.The telltale occasionally stops to a drip and needs some poking to
start it flowing. No real problem, but a bit scary sometimes.

I haven't noticed the pee hole stopping up on my motor. Probably just the particular lake you are in. I mainly striper fish and catfish so I mainly stay in deep water and away from the weeds and dirt.

Only use Mercury lower unit oil. I only use their Premium oil. And have never had a problem with a lower unit.
