changing oil mix?

My buddy just picked up a '53 evinrude 5hp, if I remember correctly the mix was 32:1. He told me a mechanic said that with the new oils he could run 50:1 . I think this is a disaster waiting to happen, yes or no?

If you look at Chinewalkers article in the Engine FAQs you'll find 24:1 for pre 1960.

Actually, it is 24:1 for pre 1964 OMC engines.

It is 24:1 but you'll find that if you use a high quality synthetic or synthetic blend it will smoke a lot less.

Evinrude didn't make a 5hp in the 50's. Are you sure of what you have? They made a 5.5hp in '56 though...

And I run 24:1 in my 1950 Evinrude 7.5hp and it seems to work fine. I use full synthetic tcw3 though.

I stand corrected on the right ratio, I guess the real question was is this mechanic looking for business by reccommending changing to 50:1 with modern oils?

I doubt it. He is probably satisfying a need to be knowledgable.. .unsuccessfully.

I have heard that the reason the older motors called for more oil in the mix is because they just used regular motor oil in them back then and when 2 stroke specific oils were formulated the ratio changed to 50:1. I don't claim to be an expert but it makes sense. That is why it is supposedly ok to run 50:1 in the older motors, because the newer oils are better, not because of any real differences in the engines themselves.
