Re: Changing oil on a diesel!!

I started testing my oil early this year (Blackstone), I'm changing at 7,500 miles however they say I could go longer.

96 Dodge Cummins 5.9 12 valve, 208k miles.

On my truck (YMMV) the oil lubricates the engine, the turbo bearing, the injection pump, and the vacuum pump. Either change at the manufacturers interval or get it tested.

I also had my oil tested and was told the same thing, changing out at 10k now.
2007 Ram Cummins 5.9 @ 152k miles.

Careful with using any other engines drain interval. Oil qty makes a big difference, more oil by displacement and hp = longer interval. Not all are equal. Sampling is great, without it use the manufacturer numbers as some have said.

Exactly what they told me. I've been on 10K intervals for almost 100K miles now. How often do you test now? I do it once a year myself.

Diesel oil is a high detergent oil and alot of soot gets in the oil turning it black. Like the others have said flushing it with diesel IS NOT a good idea. It can ruin your high pressure oil pump and injectors and can be very costly. Todays ultra low sulfer diesels of today have hardly any lubrication qualitys and can cause damage to your engine.

I've only heard of a few fuel related problems with Ford's 6.7 w/Bosch CP 4.2 HPFP. The other trucks, including my 6.7 Cummins seem to be doing just fine.

Ford has always had a problem with their injectors, I worked at a dealership for a year and we changed them out all the time. Ford recommends a lubricity additive be put in the fuel as well.
