Changing registration numbers

Due to a problem at the state registration office, I have to change the numbers on the bow. The current ones have been on there for years and I know it's gonna look terrible when I remove them - with fading, oxidation, etc. Any ideas on how I could go about replacing the numbers without it looking like crap - maybe overlaying something?

If it is high enough out of the water to ensure against any chance of leaking, get a piece of SS, aluminum, brass, or plasic, and make a registration tag to attach on each side to cover the old numbers with SS screws.

I put a large white decal on one of my old boats.
