In the process of tuning up a 1969 25 hp Johnson. I want to change the gear lube after the carb reduild and the point, and condinser replace. The manual says to add the lube through the drain hole, add untill it starts to come out of the top hole. Is there some kind of pump a guy could use to install the lube the correct way? The manual kind of shows a guy with like a bug sprayer container, adding the oil. Im assuming they are adding through the lower hole to get the air out? Sure would be nice if I could add the oil through the top hole, and just turn the prop by hand to work the bubbles out.

Re: Changing the gear lube

If you have the patience of a saint and about a day to do it, you can put it in the top hole a drop at a time. Otherwise, do it like the book says. Yes, there is a handy little pump that fits quart bottles. Most marine dealers have them--or Wal Mart.

EDIT: iboats has 'em too, but they are marked "out of stock". http://www.iboats.com/Mercury_Johns...6550703--**********.851262562--view_id.394208

A lower unit pump is worth it's weight in gold in my opinion. Did it once by squeezing the lube up with the tube alone. Lost a lot of lube in the process and made a mess of the driveway. Just not worth it.
