When changing my water pump on my stringer can i leave the outdrive attached to the boat, tilt it all the way up and separate lower gear case. Then access it from the bottom of the upper gear case?

Sweet thanks!!!!! Saves a little time and I'm doing this alone so I don't have to muscle the whole outdrive off!!

just watch you don't stress or strain the shift cable (if 1978-1985 stringer)

Make sure you disconnect the shift cables on an electric shift ... it'd kill your boating season for sure if you yanked that cable outta' the lower unit.

Ok thanks! Do I need to get the whole lower gear drive seal kit because I'm splitting the lower drive from the upper?

Re: Changing water pump

You probably want to order a manual to help walk you through this, but you can also look at diagrams HERE. You'll need to click the drop down to "Stern Drive" and then choose yours.

The connectors for the shift wires are on the port side (left if you're facing the front of the boat) of the engine, just in front of the intermediate housing. Those will have to feed all the way through the upper gear case. I suppose it's possible to do the work with them connected, but I'd be terrified that I'd lose control of the lower and break 'em.

Shouldn't need any seal kits for what you're doing (besides the new plate for the impeller housing.
