Chaparral 256ssi question

I am in the middle of purchasing a new 256ssi with the mercruiser 8.1. When looking at the boat the engine did not have the top cover on it that says "496" mercruiser. The salesman said this is because the engine hatch sits too low. I am wondering if this is true. I can't imagine Chaparral building a boat they had to take the engine cover off in order for the hatch to fully close. Can anyone tell me if the have seen a 256ssi with an 8.1 engine having the engine cover on top?

Thanks--Derek

Re: Chaparral 256ssi question

I have heard of this before. And it's not just Chaparral.
Test drive the boat with the dealer present, and listen for the "whistle" from the throttle body. If it's too loud, don't accept the boat til it's fixed. Do a search, it's a common problem w/8.1s.

Re: Chaparral 256ssi question

Derek,

I have personally had the engine cover up on the 256ssi with the Volvo 8.1. It was very tight on top. The dealer was claiming that closed cooling wouldn't fit and I sneaked into the shop and verified that it would  If the Merc mounts any higher at all it would be an issue, there was only two inches to spare. I was blown away that the dealer thought it wouldn't fit for the same reason you did. Maybe they messed up and designed that cover around a 454 . . .

I think I posted something about that combo in another thread of yours. Nice boat. The 236ssi I mentioned over there leaked at the transom swim-step joint if beached (the step would go under water). They've got it sealed up now, but I'd take a good look around that area. I don't believe the 256 I know has the same issue, but I've only seen it on the beach once and I wasn't with him when he pulled it out.

Re: Chaparral 256ssi question

Well I talked to the customer service representive at chaparral and she verified that the "flame arrester" ie. engine cover will not fit on models 256ssi, 260ssi, 265ssi etc. She said this was due to the low transom walk-thru and something about when they designed the boat they weren't anticipating putting the 8.1 in it. Seems a little weird since you could order them when they were first introduced in 2004 1/2 with the 8.1. She said I could have the engine cover and see if I could modify it to fit. I think I will. I am still going through with the purchase of the boat. For the money I love the way it looks and all the options. It seemed as though other brands (searay, cobalt) were 10-15 thousand more for the same type boat. Not that this one is cheap. Hopefully I won't have to use it, but I did opt for the 5 year extended warranty. Anyway, I pick it up next week. Can't wait!! Thanks for the replies.

Derek
