charging a deep cycle battery

Hi. I have a 30HP mariner with a dedicated cranking battery on my boat. I want to install a 12V refrigerator which pulls 40-60W and so need a deep cycle battery. The thing is how do I keep it charged? I don't have shore power and I presume my outboard won't be sufficent. What are my options?

...or a really loooooooooooooooooong extension cord! ;)

Sorry, couldn't resist. I take it this is not a trailered boat?

I agree, I wouldn't count on the outboard to keep it charged - and it would take a boatload of solar cells. Multiple batteries in a parallel connection will give you longer run time - but without a power source you're left with bringing them home with you.

They do make dual-powered appliances - I'm not sure...maybe you could run it on propane while in the slip and battery power on the water? I'm just guessing here - I'm thinking a propane fridge could be left unattended, but not a running generator.

good luck...

You may be able to find a refridge that draws less current than that also.

I agree with the propane idea but some marinas don't allow lit propane appliances left unattended - check first.
