real friends will offer to help out on the gas bill. When I invite people to go fishing I will tell them to pack there own lunch and drinks. But gas and bait are on me.

A friend of mine has a 44' Carver down in Houston. He told that he was not allowed to accept any gas money. He said the authorities were stopping boats for inspection and if any of the passengers admitted to paying gas money that he could be cited for an "unlicensed charter".

I just let him have my wife for the night and we called it even.:D

No actual "charge" as such. A lot of folk will grab the jerricans at the cottage when they are going into town for other supplies and fill them up while they are out for you. Others share the expenses in other ways like groceries etc. The ones that are never around when a wallet needs to be used are the ones that after a while are never invited back.
These folk seem to find other friends on a regular basis !!

Again, there is no way that an "unlicensed charter" citation would ever stand up because a bunch of people chipped in for a boat ride. I just don't buy it. And if this was "Actually" happening, I'm sure there is much more to the story.

^ LOL, granted, good thing that wasnt mentioned, else they would have tacked on a few more charges!

If he can not accept any gas money, can he accept gas instead?
What if one of the guests will fill it up for him?

I've heard the same, numerous times around here.

Why chance it? Who charges their friends anyway? Not me. Like I said earlier, guest don't pay, uninvited "guests" get the heave ho.

I have a friend that charges gas money or bring a cooler of drinks and food.
At Marine gas at $4 a gal. its painful.
But if I invited someone, it would be wrong to expect them to pay.

if I invite someone they are my guest. Decorum dictates they don't pay and I should not expect them to. However my friends always offer and its always a fight at the gas pump just like at an eatery over who gets the check. :D

Re: Charging Guest For Gas Money

If you invite someone out for the day don't ask them for money, why did you invite them in the first place. But if they have a few kids etc and want to learn to wake board don't be shy about taking a 20 spot if they offer. If they don't even offer then chalk it up as a lesson learned about those perticular "friends". When I was 18 ish and didn't have a boat for a summer I would often go to the docks at a local lake and pimp a pull on a ski, 10 or 20 bucks would keep me on the water all day long. I would still help with loading wipe down etc, made friends I still boat and ski with to this day and that was over 20 years ago. Most times it would be a family that the wife didn't know how to drive too well so they would bring along another set of hands that could skipper well or even teach them the ropes. Even at 18-19 if you have been raised on a boat you know pretty well what you are doing. I even fixed a guys boat one time while out on the lake and got him back to shore he gladly gave my 20 back and wanted to pay me for the repair(which I gratefully declined).

Re: Charging Guest For Gas Money

I've done it once, and I won't do it again. Will never take a friend whom I don't won't to pay to the gas bar. I've done it once and later I realized that it could look like I wanted him to pay for the gas. We actually went into the arguments over who'll pick the bill, and I absolutely didn't want him to do it.
So next time if I don't want somebody to pay the bill, I won't take him to the pump. I'll make sure that I fill it up the night before.

Re: Charging Guest For Gas Money

Around here we have a term for people who beg a spot from private boaters to go fishing. They are known as "boat *****s." :D They bring their own gear and food & drink, pay cash (though less than a spot on a crowded charter), the boat owner gets cut-rate gas and bait, and everyone's happy. Unless that particular ***** happens to be a jerk, in which case word gets around quickly and they don't get picked up again by anyone

(Since they pay, maybe they should be called "boat Johns"...never thought about that before  )

I boat *****d myself for a few years, until I learned the local fishing spots and techniques, and saved up for my own boat. Made quite a few friends that way, too.

Ask for money from a friend or relative? Nah, but if they want a second trip they better volunteer to pitch in something, be it food, beer or bait or gas money.

I've never charged & wouldn't accept it if offered, they are invited guests. I grew up with the understanding that to accept anything turns you into a vessel for hire, Not a risk I will take. Simple as that.

I was waiting for that! I realized my circular criticism as soon as I re-read...:D

That being said, I have plenty experience as a maritime law enformence officer, and have yet to see anything play out as mentioned. Where as, I have seen the opposite situation where people were using the "friends on the boat" as a way to skirt the statute to require the USCG license and were actually for hire...

Regarless, I would never actually "charge" for someone to come on out, especially if invited. I would find it odd if they didnt offer to help on gas (as there has been many times I didnt have a boat and after invited I insisted on paying for that and lunch!). And I guess I differ from some when I say I'll except that offer...

Lastly, I never want to be in the situation where someone could even think I was mooching, and likewise, I dont want to be in the awkward position where I feel like a friend might be mooching...

Re: Charging Guest For Gas Money

We don't require anyone to pay. If they offer a 20 or so I will take it depending on who it is.

Mostly I figure I am burning gas anyway.

Actually got into a thing with my Dad, who is not a boater. He wanted to pay for gas when we took him and Mom out and I would not let him. I figure he has spent enough on me over the years and it is time to give back.
So what did he do... he went into the store and put down a credit for me to have the next time I got fuel. Good old Dad!:)

Never asked for any gas money, but I have the type of friends who will offer every time out. Don't take it but I do expect help when cleaning / rinsing the boat afterward....everytime......from everyone.....

Re: Charging Guest For Gas Money

Do I ask or accept gas money????
For the last two years I usually invited people that did not have the means to chip in for gas. I would also pick them up and get them into the park where I launch the boat and spend the day (it cost $10 a car load). I do this because I love to see the smiles on people who have never been on a boat, never tubed, ski'ed, wakeboarded, ect... To me it is just the fun of my family having fun with others.

Now...

If they keep bugging me for repeat trips and I have invited other people for the day the repeaters are wlecome to come (ontheir own dime) and hang out and get on the boat when the others are tired but I do not go tooo overboard in accomdiating them.

If invites bring food and drinks and they have something that looks good, I'm not oposed to asking them for a bite or a drink.

Re: Charging Guest For Gas Money

When you call up your friends to see if they want to go out to dinner, is it assumed that your paying because you invited them? When I invite someone to go fishing on my boat, I don't expect them to chip in, sometimes I'll take some when they do, sometimes I won't, but it's nice to have them at least offer it.

I also agree that sometimes it's best to have the conversation up front if there is an expectation for them to chip in for gas.
