Re: charging / lacks power in water 150 merc

Hi, I'm having the same problem with my 150 v6 merc. The motor loads up with fuel while idling and when you try to go to 1/2 throttle or more it simply does not accelerate. I think the problem is weak reeds as I have tried everything else I could think of. Try this. After warming the engine at idle disconnect the fuel supply and let it run. When it has used most of the fuel in the carbs the engine speed will increase and smooth out (if you have the same problem as mine)just before it stops running. This is what mine does and if I keep it at full throttle long enough it will clear out and take off like a rocket.

I have a 60 hp that did the same thing. Try a different prop. Mine turned out to be a spun hub. The motor would not get to planing speed and not accelerate. The RPM's would not even sky-rocket like it should have with a spun hub. Replaced prop and have no problems now.
Just a simple solution to frstrating problem and my experience.
D

Yep sounded completely normal on the trailer
I spent all that money playing parts changer
not to mention running around finding parts
to find out it was the switch box

moral of the story changing parts is expensive now when I have trouble I take to my dealer and ask for a diagnosis and estimate he charges one hour labor for a diagnostic I'm a great mechanic
but sometimes I have to call the Man

Have there been any changes to the boats hull? It sounds like the engine is fine but not able to get up on plane due to another issue. Don't laugh, but how much water is in the hull?

Hello all I too am having the same problem with my 1988 150 black max. I had it running at 5400 rpms doing about 40 mph, then all of a sudden I just lost power. I had everything in the motor changed before the summer, aka (plugs, impeller, pump, thermostats, not sure about the stator? I have to check. anyone have any Ideas, I am also going to nuts trying to get this thing running right... I tryied making some adjustments in the motor with the idel and the spark screw. Can i have messed up the timming or can the plugs have gone bad already>> anyone have any ideas.

Can you also email me at nick1antanies@aol.com and post comments.
thanks again.
Nick A

There is a post here from around april started by KCLOST that covers stator and switchbox tests. I am with clanton and truman lake (stator)but if you search out the post by user name I believe you will find answers to ohming out the ignition parts.

16 days have past, and we still don't know anything really about this problem. i think everyone including myself has contributed with information, but we have not heard any results from any of the tests on the stator. or have i missed something? hmmmm

Check stator by first looking under flywheel to see if black coating around coils got hot and melted some, also use meter and repair manual.Same problem happend to a friend of mine, he told me that a stator has two coils and that the high speed coil burned out but that the low speed coil still worked and that it would idle but not plane out.(cannot be tested on muffs).Let us know how it's going.
