i just learned that my motor is an 89 so i have an 89 mercury 80hp, its not charging. I have a book and i was goning to try to test the rectifier but i'm not exactly sure how to test it. the book says if it has continunity then it is good. But it looks like theres a few hot spots on it. any help would be greatly apreciated.

Re: Charging Problem

A rectifier converts AC to DC.. The book should explain that you should have continuity in only one direction between pins an not across all pins. Any voltage on the engine side?

Re: Charging Problem

It is important to know how much and what type. If you get AC on the boat side of the rectifier, change it. If there is low ac on the engine side, the book will give you the range, you may have bad contacts or more expensive problems. A little time with a meter and some numbers will go a long way toward getting an answer...

Is Mesquite Charlie's still up on W street?? Best steak and Ranch beans I ever had at a resturaunt...

Yeah mesquite charlies is still there. they have awsome food. I went there a couple weeks ago and they still are great. Thanks for the info. I talked to the boat dealer i deal with and he said that from what i've told him he's 90% positive its my rectifier. I was worried about the stator but he said i had a better chance of getting struck by lighting than that going bad. Not sure if its true or now but who knows.
