Charging Problem

Working on an Evinrude 110 hp E110TLCDC battery is not charging. Checked voltage across the battery terminals with engine running. 12.57 volts. Not Charging. Checked voltage out of the charging coil with engine running, got 54.7 volts. Isloated charge lead from the regulator to the solenoid and found .5 volts with engine at 2,000rpm. That should verify the regulator rectifier is junk right? Any idea how much it costs? Thanks

Re: Charging Problem

Is your tach functioning?

Have you tested the stator as per your manual?

Re: Charging Problem

So you ran it with the rectifier to solenoid wire disconnected? Don't do that. Running on open circuit causes the stator output voltage to go way up. Good way to blow a rectifier because they aren't made to handle that kind of voltages. That 54 volts is not normal and is happening because it is running on open circuit (open rectifier diodes). However, yes yours is shot anyway.

Before you put a new rectifier in there, check the battery and cable connections. Corroded/oxidized connections are seen by the rectifier as an open circuit and poof!!!

Re: Charging Problem

Voltage test of a disconnected stator can/are misleading. A broken winding can produce no load voltage and yet fail to charge once connected to a good rectifier. Using a DVA which has some load within is a more reliable test.

Re: Charging Problem

I was using a dva, the circuit was not open when I tested stator output. Checked all connections for corrosion and weak connections. A few years ago the motor seized and someone worked on it and hacked it all up. What a shame.

Re: Charging Problem

Problem is either defective rectifier or wire between rectifier and solenoid.
