My motor is missing both the rectifier and the diode which connects to it to control prop engagement when the ignition is turned off. does this diode have to be in place for the system to charge? I purchased a rectifier and it is on its way to me. just curious if I have to have the Diode.

I think you mean a 1970 model. The blocking diode is for the shift, the charging system will work without it.

I did mean 1970 sorry and thanks for the reply. The way I understand it the diode is only there so the prop does not engage when the key switch is turned off. I would replace but it is 50 bucks.

Without looking it up in the manual, it provides voltage to the shift solenoids as long as the flywheel is turning, keeps it from going into forward when you turn off the key. You can operate the engine without it, but remember that the instant you turn off the key the lower unit will go into forward and the boat might move forward a little.

So I guess of more concern would be if the key switch was turned off while it was in reverse and it suddenly slammed into forward gear I could see where that could cause some damage. MAybe I will go ahead and order the part as a safety precaution. Thanks

I have learned that it is usually best if something is repaired to work the way it was designed to work. Might also have some safty issues when it doesn't work properly.
