That is a regulated rectifier. You can go as far as Joe Reeves described and also check the charging at the battery.

I got my carb kits from NAPA. Do they also sell stators?

One thing I just thought of, make sure that the purple wire going to the regulator has 12v when the key is on, otherwise the chaging system won't work. I found this out while I was testing my 89 100hp on a stand, I built a control box to start and stop the motor but I didn't think about the power from the key back to motor. Without the power from the key to energize the regulator the charging system didn't work. Just somthing to check out before buying parts.
