Before fitting the new rectifier check the stator coil with your multimeter set to its lowest ohms range. You should get a fairly low resistance but I forget what.
If you get no reading it indicates that the stator coil is open circuited.

where are the wires to check for that?

They are the yellow and yellow/gray wires that were connected to the same colour wires on the rectifier.

okay i tested those wires on the lowest ohm setting and got a slight reading and if i spun the flywheel a little they jumped.



i got the new rectifier installed...


still no tach. but the new rectifier shows its good according to joe reeves testing procedure.


now heres the wierd part: my multimeter jumps like crazy when the motor is running... heres a video of it.





now heres the other thing: i can no longer shut it off with the key. i have to choke it out.

If that is with the voltmeter connected to the battery it has me stumped.

Bad connection somewhere perhaps ?? something shorting ??

Tach not reading is suspicious too, not to mention being unable to stop it with the key.

well i think i figured out what is up with the key... i think my switch is going bad.. if i jiggle the key in the off position it will shut off.

Put the meter on the next highest range, whatever that is for your meter. Retry.

i did, it was the same no matter what the range...

You have equipment problems. Test other things...your car, house voltages at the outlet, etc. to see if the meter reads those circuits properly. It absolutley should not jump around when engine is running. It this an expensive meter, or is it a Harbor freight $5.99 special?

i got it at wal mart, i think it was around 18 bucks.

seems to be meter problem. set on DC Volts, you should not get that "autoranging" bouncing around.
I do not think the engine has anything to do with the meter's behavior.

Mine is doing the same thing. Just got it from WalMart for 17-18 bucks. Mine is a yellow ETek. I'll be replacing it with the $25 red one.

and thanks to everyone for the help... took her out saturday and didnt have any problems... well except for the not shutting off thing, but thats a different issue. looks like a new switch is what i need...
