Charging voltage

What should the voltage be with the engine running? I have a 89 Force 125 that appears not to be charging. Voltage at the battery with the motor off is 12.35 and with the motor running is 12.39V

Thanks in advance

Re: Charging voltage

For a 12 volt auto/marine battery, usual charging voltage is 13-14. Most Force engines are not regulated and deliver a charging voltage of around 16.

So if you are only getting 12-12.5 while running, the engine is definitely not properly charging the battery. The most likely culprit is the rectifier mounted on the starter motor mount.

You can pay big bucks for the Mercury/Force branded part or you can go to Radio Shack and buy the generic version.

Use the search function to find the past thread that gives the part number.
