Good Evening ; Can some one tell if a non charging motor can be turned into a charging motor ? I have a 1979 35 hp Johnson . I am putting electric start on and I was wondering if I can put charging system on also ? Thanks Pete

Frequently you can find parts on eBay, you need to research the parts needed before hand though.

Why bother. If the engine is properly tuned and you installed a decent size deep cycle or dual purpose battery you could likely run several months before charging would be necessary. In the good old days this is the way it was done. Yes -- it is perfectly acceptable to use a deep cycle battery for starting these small engines. If you have power at the dock or wherever the boat is stored when not in use, install a small smart charger and plug into house power when not in use.

Silvertip is absolutely correct. Contact your Bombardier dealer. OMC used to make charging kits (separate from the elec start kit) for those engines. Hopefully, they are not discontinued. If they are, you may be able to get the old part number of the original charging kit, some US dealer may still have a new one in stock....

I checked the online factory parts and accessory guide. They show an original alternator kit number of 173346 which is NLA. It supercedes to 173964, which is currently in stock at Bombardier. You will find that to purchase that new kit, that it is worth more than your engine.

I've put charging systems on a couple of motors, typically the charging coil can be purchased on eBay from $25 to $50 and then you can get a rectifier at radio Shack for $5.00

Lots of solar trickle chargers on the market too, at a pretty reasonable price!

Some of these kits are expensive because the flywheel has to be replaced. If the engine's got electric start, it may be OK.
