Chatter noise when put into gear and hardly no revers

When i put my 115 hp 2 stroke merc in forward or reverse gear it makes a bad chatter noise. It feels like it is grabbing especially in forward and when i put it in reverse there is hardly anything there. I cant back it off the trailer without it dying.

Make sure the shifting linkage is putting the lower all the way in forward and reverse gears and not just enough to make it grind. There's adjustment on the passenger side IF this is the problem. If not I would inspect my forward, reverse and pinnion gears.........Blazer
