cheap alternative to new gel coat??

I have an old 76 fiberglass boat and the sides of the boat a in decent shape but the bottom theres qite a few chips and a patch also spots were it has worn off from going on and off the trailer.Basicly i dont want to re gel coat it but was wondering if there is some kind of sealer, i noticed on a boat i saw he had like a black almost like bed liner sealer type of stuff on the bottom was was wondering what it is. Anyway any help would be great.

That was probably bottom paint. You could buy one of these for the chips.

ok thaks for the info i have one more ? there is a lot of chips only on the bottom though could i use just the bottom paint say 3 coats to cover the chips as well? or should i use the gel coat repair on all the chips then bottom paint?

Well . . . bottom paint is not for sealing, it is to protect against marine growth while a boat is stored in the water. If you have damage through the gelcoat and into the fiberglass, it needs to be repaired properly. Might last forever like it is, but it also might start blistering, failing, sinking . . . etc.
