we are going to paint an old fiberglass boat to look like the general lee. We are using vansickle allis chalmers orange paint from farm & home. We just plan on lightly sanding the boat and them putting the paint directly on over that. Is there really any need for a primer? Also we were planning on using a hardener, is that a good idea with implement paing such as this? Basically just looking for some suggestions before we paint next week. Thanks!

Sand down the hull uniformly, wipe with acetone and get to painting! If you plan to paint it to look like the General Lee, one can only assume you have some idea of how to actually paint, so I'll leave it at that. That's all I plan to do to my hull when I get ready to paint.

No need for primer, but you do need to prep the surface well, not just a light sanding. That is if you want it to stick. As for hardener, if the paint is designed so it can be used with one, use it.

Sounds like a plan. Definitely use the hardener.

I just got the last coat of orange on the boat last night, so I havent forgot about you guys as far as pics go. I still need to paint up the motor and put all the interior back in, but I promise there will be pics.

So in order to paint it like the General Lee, do you paint it with a cornhusk paintbrush in one hand with a Mason jar of shine in the other while smoking a corncob pipe and wearing striped bib overalls?
Of course the best way would be sittin under the tree with the shine and pipe while Daisy Duke paints it for me.

Please tell me you are putting in the horn.

Also, I just can't get this mental image out of my head.
