I have a 1997 Mercury 40 hp outboard, 2 stroke, 3 cylinders, pull start. I am fairly sure I need a different prop, but I need to get a tach reading for WOT to see where I am on RPM (manufacturer's range is 5000 to 5500). I don't really need to hardware a permanent tach to the motor (also not sure how I would go about doing it; I've been told that since it is pull start, this could complicate things, such as finding a tach that connects to the stator). I don't really want to shell out the $$$ I've seen some of the handheld units costs, or to have to pay some mechanic 1/2 hour shop time just to use his tach for a few minutes. Basically it just seems that there has to be an easier/cheaper way to do this, but I just can't seem to find out what it is. Desperate for answers here; any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
