I'm looking to paint the orange stripe on my boat black. What is the cheapest way to do this. I'm looking for it to last a couple seasons. My boat is also trailered. Can I use automotive spray paint, the stuff in the can?

thanks,
Matt

if you want florscent orange, go to home depot or lowes, they have it, in a spray can. tape it off good, and have a ball.

Re: cheapest paint possible

Here is what you need,
Interlux Brightside 4258 black paint
202 solvent wash pint
333 brushing liquid
220 grit sand paper
3M blue masking tape
quart mixing pots
closed cell foam roller (solvent core)
Badger or China bristle brush
clean rags
a weekend

Use solvent wash to clean area to be painted, wipe on wet, wipe off with dry clean rag in each area, a small area at a time....twice.
Sand area with 220 to scuff, make it look dull, do not sand through gelcoat.
Clean again with 202...twice. (two rag method) again.
Tape borders of area to be painted, rub tape with rag concentrating on paint line to burnish tape. (makes clean line) Use drapes or tarps to protect from unwanted drips on areas not to be painted.
Mix paint in can thoroughly with stir let stand in can while supplies are gathered.
use brushing liquid to clean roller by rubbing lengthwise with rag and solvent, clean brush with 333 also prior to painting. wipe out roller tray liner.
Use separate mixing pot and 333 to thin enough paint to do one coat over the area to be painted. Thin as directed on can. Let it sit for a few minutes after mixing thinner in.
Apply the paint with the roller in a small area in a thin coat, then tip the rolled paint off with the brush to disperse 'stippling' in the paint. Use top to bottom strokes with the brush at a 45 deg angle to the painted surface. Use light pressure with the brush top to bottom in single strips in the wet paint. Roll the next section from the dry hull into the wet edge of the prior section small sections at a time and tip off with the brush until the whole area is painted in a single coat.
Sand the paint again after drying overnight. And paint a second coat after wiping the sanded paint down with 333. Continue this until you get the desired color and shine.
The paint is designed to be applied this way and will level out when dry leaving a shiney new black stripe around your boat.
Hints, paint in the morning after the dew dries off.
Only paint in dry weather, moist air can hurt the shine.
Use more thinner in hot weather, less in cooler temps.
Its not as cheap and easy as spray paint, but it will last and look great!

Re: cheapest paint possible

nice advice drew but the cheapest easyest way is to get 2qts of paint interlux or autotype. tape off boat . use a scratch pad to rough up gell coat. wash it down wash acidtone. spray on 3 coats with a pro spray gun. take the boat to mako . if you cannot do it. if not do the brush way drew say. do not use spray cans as it will make the boat look like crap as that a big area to cover with cans. that interlux paint is some good stuff.

I want to make sure you realize the importance of cleaning the surface properly for adhesion. Fiberglass boats are made in a mold using release wax as a means of removing it from the mold. It is very important that this wax is removed prior to painting. Interlux recommends 202 solvent wash (along with others) to do this. The surface should be cleaned PRIOR to doing any sanding. If you skip this, you risk sanding the wax into surface. It does not matter how old the boat is or how many times it has been washed, wax will remain on the surface. It is simple insurance to clean the area to be painted very well. Acetone is not recommended because it flashes off the surface too quickly. Acetone also has impurities in it that can cause problems.
I do not mean to say that Acetone will not work. I am sure many automotive guys have had good results using their methods. I work with several paint and body guys that swear by them. However none of them work in marine applications. I personally do not recommend automotive paints. I have had great results using a roll/tip method.
I feel that automotive paints work best above the waterline on trailer boats, but I would be afraid of using it on a boat that stays in the water any length of time, especially in salt water.

Just an opinion........ Cheap paint? Consider how long a quality paint will last and do the math. If it lasts 5 or 10 years divide the good stuff by those numbers. Cheap paint will be costly in the long run.
