I went to remove the spare tire from my Express Van. The cable will move down, but the carrier that goes inside the rim will not release from the winch carrier. Someone told me that there are two latching mechanisms. If so, how does one get it to release? I'm just shy of taking the ole plasma cutter and permanently removing it. :D Thanks.........SS

read the owners manual some of the chevys you had to use the jack and jack up on the tire to release the first lock

Hmmmm, I've used the spare tire several times as I change from summer to winter season tires. Never had to have it up before, but hey, I'll give it a try :D

SS try moving to one side or the other of the van lay down and kick the snot out of the spare once you have loosened the hanger a little :D. I used to have this problem with an Astro I had the tire would actually stick to the bottom of the van from being up there so long a good kick and it would flop right down . Thats why I said just loosen the hanger :D.

The spare did drop down about 4", but that is as far as it will go. Now I can't get it to go down or up any at all. I'm going to check it out further at work today. Sure hate to go cutting on my van.......

You go threw the door on the bumper to crank her down with the supplied extender for the jack....if so make you have the right end in there ....I tried for about 5 minutes one day since I had the wrong end in ....well the guys in the shop flipped her around when I went to the can.....it was a valueable lesson

Ah life in the good old rust belt, the spare under my Exploder has been there for 10 years and 180 thousand miles the lug mounting area looks like rust crust.
Glad I have good tyres.

Even a good tire can get cut on a foreign object. I sure wouldn't drive around with a spare tire that I knew I couldn't get off. Yikes!

Sorry for all you guy's troubles!

Re: Chebby guys, I need help....Please?

I was about to crawl under my van at the shop when the boss pulled up. Told me to get my arse out of there. :D He didn't want me to get hurt as I'm headed for an important re-certification class. He had me take it to a metal shop that we do business with. Since the tire was suspended by the carrier and not the lift cable with about 4" clearance, the guy was able to get the tire lifted up to wiggle the carrier out of the rim.

Of course curiosity was eating at me to find out why the carrier would not release. Yup, pretty much corrosion caused things to seize up. There was only one bolt holding the whole assembly in place. Took it out and put it in the bench vise and got everything freed up and working like it should.

FWIW, if I knew before hand how the thing worked, I could have gotten the second latch undone. There is the cable that lifts/lowers the tire, and then there is a catch that engages a hook to prevent the lift from lowering on its own.

Where the cable goes through the carrier (the part that holds the rim) is a bushing. It was rusted and would not move. Once I had it lubed, I pushed the bushing up into the carrier which disengages the hook that locks the carrier up. Plus, I had bird nested the cable in the winch which locked it up.

At least I got it done. I need to remember to lube it up in the fall and spring.

No doubt we have a bad rust season. I had my bucket truck out last week removing some tent worms in the trees by my house. I took off and the rear end felt like it was coming out of the truck. It almost did as it broke a "U" bolt on each side of the rear end to the springs. Just glad it didn't happen when out on a job :D

Thanks for the help, maybe this info will help someone else get their spare out without cutting it out............SS
