Check engine alarm

My check engine alarm comes on when I am running at full throttle but when I back off the alarm goes off. Anyone have any idea whats going on? My engine is a 1996 Evinrude 175 hp Intruder. Thanks for the help.

it is either low oil or over heat
u need to test the sensors

Using pre mixed gas would eliminate low oil. Tell us how long the horn sounds before it shuts off and starts back up. What I am asking for is does it sound for 20 sec. then shuts off for 20 sec and the comes back on for 20 sec.

I just bought a boat and, I've already heard a hundred stories about how someone ignored the alarm and burned up there engine in just a few minutes. When was the last time the impeler was changed? I've had several people tell me it won't hurt to run the motor a little without water. I got a manual and it says even a few seconds without water will damage the pump.

The alarm is not coming on and off, When I would hear the alarm I would back off the throttle and it would go away. I just bought the boat and the previous owner said he just changed the impeller. Does the engine have a rev limiter or an alarm if your rpm's get too high? I bought the boat last weekend and it didn't do this. The only thing that I have done to the boat is clean it up and install a new steering cable. The steering cable did cause a problem with my gps antenna and I had to pull out the antenna to fix, could it be the same problem with the check engine alarm?

Also how do I test the sensors, and it sat in the water running for 20 min with a strong stream and no alarm.

Ignoring alarms can indeed destroy an engine. If that were not true there would be no need to have alarms. If you hear a steady alarm chances are you have a stuck thermostat causing a high rpm overheat. As for the impeller, it is rubber and requires water for lubrication. Running the engine without water for even a few seconds can damage it. Pre-mixing fuel won't turn off an oil related alarm. Pulsating beeps are oil related alarms (low oil/no oil/fuel restriction). If you intend to service the engine yourself you really need a service manual.

There are four alarms on the gauge the only one that is coming on is the one that says "check engine". None of the other alarms are lit up these would be; Low oil, Hi temp, and Low water. At no time did the water stream stop and I am not considering mixing the oil and gas. Thanks, Marshall

The water stream indicates that the water pump is pumping but that does not necessarily mean that the cooling water is going where it needs to or that the pump is pumping enough.

For what it is worth I don't have much faith in what the seller tells me. After all his objective is to take money out of your pocket.

And - no the alsrm has nothing to do with the GPS, steering or anchor.

Do you have the shop manual yet? It will give you the diagnostic tests and expected results.

I believe that your motor has a constant alarm circuit for fuel [gasoline] obstruction as well as the others already mentioned.

the CHECK ENGINE alarm on your motor means that there is a fuel restriction somewhere in the plumbing, that's why it goes away as you throttle back. It is NOT an overheat or a no-oil situation as those specific lites would illuminate should that be the case.

The most common problems in a fuel restriction situation are plugged filters, a kinked fuel line, or trash buildup in the gas tank pickup or anti-siphon valve.
