Check List

Got a manual coming in the mail. In a couple weeks I think I will have a weekend to try my first carb cleaning. Been reading the posts here but just wanted to make sure I had everything I needed so I didn't get stuck.

Carb kit for each carb
OEM manual
"Special" tool for jets
Air Compressor
Carb Cleaner

And of course this forum!

My engine will crank fine the first time I go out for the day. It doesn't idle very well and cranking it for the rest of time on the water is tedious. Ultimately I have to rev the engine up in neutral for it to stay cranked which also puts out a quick plum of smoke but runs fine at WOT.

Hope cleaning the carbs will help here. Is this a good place to start or should I be looking elsewhere

Re: Check List

What motor?

It's generally a good idea to do compression and spark tests, as those are quick & easy, and either could be contributing to your symptoms. But sounds to me like it's a pretty good probability you'll end up rebuilding the carbs anyway.

1998 50hp Johnson. Mod No = J50TSLECC

I will check the compression and spark. Any idea what compression I should be looking for or just test first then see what I get?

Re: Check List

if the cylinders are within 5% or so of each other, it's good. I'd expect upwards of 110, but equal compression is more important than the numbers themselves.

Re: Check List

What kind of tester for spark should i get? I think there is an attached image of one in the sticky about reviving a sitting engine but it won't enlarge so I can see it.

I also need to get a compression tester but they all seem to be similar but am always open to suggestions.

About the carb kit. Should I get one with or without floats? Saw that both exist after looking through posts. And do you know if my carbs are metal or plastic? Still waiting on manual.

Re: Check List

Sry one more. I was just on iboats to find the carb kit and they only list a kit for 50hp engine for year up to 1997. So my question. The sticker on my engine says 1997 but the only way I can find info about my engine online is to look under 1998.

Do you think this kit will work or should I look elswhere?

Thanks
