Check My Timing

I'm just doing some final checks on my boat and want to make sure I have my timing right.

The stationary timing marks consist of one large V mark and 2 more small v marks. Then, there is a short tube which is not described in my manual.

So it looks like this:

vvV O

I checked my timing against the large V and the timing is correct as is.
(set my gun to 8 degress and it landed on the large V at idle)

Am I checking against the correct point??

What is the short tube for?

Thanks

Re: Check My Timing

The tube is for a magnetic timing pickup. Dont worry about it, you dont have the tool to use this.
The large V is 0 degs. the smaller ones should 5 and 10 degs before TDC moving away from the big V. with the point between being about 7.
Use this to get as close as you can. its not a perfect science anyway. 1 deg either way is fine.
If you have an advanceing timing light sent it to the deg needed and then make the mark on the balancer line up with the big V.

Re: Check My Timing

Thanks - it's a merc 165 inline 6 fyi.

I have an advance time gun - aiming for the exact middle of the big V. Let me know if this is right.

Thanks!!!

Re: Check My Timing

Actually I believe the big V is zero, and the peak to the left is 4 degrees before top dead center, and the valley is 6, and the next peak is 8. Like this picture:

Your engine should be as follows:
point gap - .016
dwell - 31-34 degrees
timing - 6 degrees BTDC
