TMD: We've talked before and I need your help again. I have three 85s. Cn you please verify years for me:

1. 857HA Serial # 4556 2. 857HD Serial 3283 3. 857HD 5067

I think the HA is the oldest (1970?), the HDs are newer (which one is the newer of the two?).

I've looked at all three and electricaly they look the same except for the rectifier. Th HA has three plates coated in bakelite. Problem: The Chrysler Service Manual shows a blue wire running from the terminal block on the engine to the distributor. I only have a white & black one (coming from the CD) going there on all three motors. I don't have any specialized test equipment including a good multimeter. What makes the distibutor hot for the points if I only have the white and black wire? Should there be a blue wire? What's the check for fire? I have no spark to the plugs. The CD is supposed to be good (marine deaer said so). Can you help me?

TMD: Update - Failed to mention that the service manual also shows a distributor with two terminals I only have the one.

Re: Checking Distributor

The blue wire is only there to power the PreAmp..which you do not have. You have points. When the points make and break the spark is sent to the corrisponding cyl.

The newer engines use the blue wire...yours does not.

HA is 1970

HD should be around 1974

Disconnect the white/black wire. Remove the coil lead, and place a short piece of wire into it,that you can set 1/2in from the block.

Turn the key to ON and press the white/black against the block and of again. The coil should spark.

TMD
