1971 Evinrude, 60hp, selectric drive. I just repaired my lower unit and would like to know if there are any checks I can make while I have it on the bench. Can one apply 12 volts to the solenoids wires to check the solenoids and oil pump? A check with Ohm meter was within specs.<br />Unit is filled with Type C fluid.

If you have the proper drive shaft socket, you can put it on a speed wrench to turn the drive shaft by hand. Connect the leads to a 12 volt battery. If everything is correct the gearcase will shift.

I actually use a 1/2" drill. a large bit ,some 5/8 or so heater hose and some clamps. attach the hose to the shaft and the drill with hose clamps. use jumper leads and a 12v battery and spin it up. if you have two people you can shift all the gears while spinning the shaft.

Thanks. Rodbolt: Super Ideal!!!! None of my sockets, SAE or Metric would fit. Book calls for a special tool.
