I would like to check the condition of my outdrive fluid however I have read the OMC's are tricky to refill(air pockets). Is there a way for me to check for water in the outdrive without draining the fluid or losing an amount to require refilling?

You simply loosen (not remove) the drain plug at very bottom. What seeps out should be a bit transparent, not milky, If milky, it has water in it. You lose some oil when doing this. always check at dip stick to see if you need to "top off".gear lube.jpg

If it's been any time since a change??
It's time to get in there and get your hands dirty.
The scarry part is the refilling of the oil.
It's filled from the stbd.side/middle of the drive.
Get a factory manual if possible. Clymer is ok.
The drive should be serviced every year, oil change and grease the u-joints.
That way you will catch any problems befor they get bad.
The shift mech. will corrode and need to be cleaned. The alignment should be checked too.
It will give you the satisfaction it's done right and you didn't have to pay anyone.
Of coure you'll need a couple of tools$

Subcrx.Drive oil is any 80-90 gear oil.
Mercury makes a good oil(expensive) or even the Wally World oil will work.
You should start your own thread.
