Hello. I have an old Volvo Penta AQ131A, with a 270 outdrive, which is not sucking in raw water
. I have replaced the impeller and if I poor water into the raw water filter, water WILL come out of the Exhaust port. I'm going to check for air leaks in the intake system and I just wanted to know, if my problem is the seals on the lower drive, is it removable ,without taking the whole stern drive apart, so I can replace those seals around the raw water input?
Thank you
for answering my first post

Check the hose connection just below the ujoint bellows on the drive. They corrode away inside the hose and cause air leaks.

Re: Checking Raw water input

Hi again. Thank you for the reply. Since I posted I have disconnected the intake hose in the engine compartment and attached a garden hose with the water turned on slowly. I taped the water intake on the lower drive and all the water was coming out between the TOP of the intermediate housing and the suspension fork.
The area above the fork , where the water connector is, was not leaking.
I've rebuilt a lot of motors but never a Stern drive. Is there a kit for this repair AND how much of the drive do I need to remove to replace the seals and bushings in there?
I looked, but can't find a video of someone doing this proceedure. Do you know of one?
I know, To many questions!!!!
SIncerely,
Joe

I would begin by replacing the gasket under the intake fitting first. Make sure the oring side is down and sits fully into the groove between the pivot tube and intermediate housing. That gasket may still be your problem.

If you choose to replace the upper pivot bushing, your need to pull the entire drive, pull the upper and lowers off, and completely disassemble the intermediate. It's not that difficult, but takes a little time. No shimming or specialty tools needed.

OK Cpt Mello. I thank you for the tip and when I removed the old seal it was cracked and oval shaped, so it was probably the problem. I'm 150 miles from nearest marine store here in AZ so I ordered it already.
Thank you again
