Checking stator on 50 hp merc

Hi,<br /><br />I'm about to replace some parts on a 76' 50hp merc. I had an ex mechanic suggest that my stator is really weak and the trigger has high resistance. He doeesn't think its the switchbox. The spark is weak and random on the cylinders. The boat ran good all summer and then the fall i started to loose cylinders and could only idle it when the idle was cranked up. any way of confirming the diagnosis ?<br /><br />thanks in advance,<br /><br />Paul

Do you have a service manual for this engine? If not I would suggest getting one before laying down the money for a new stator and trigger assemblies. They can be quite pricey and a proper electrical system diagnosis might save you a bunch of money.<br /><br />Good luck and keep us informed!
