Well, I have no 'in water' pics, because my Merc guy and I had to ride in the boat and drive off the trailer as the ramp had no piers as it was on shoreline.
The Check is equipped with the upgraded Livorsi Smartcraft (Mercury feature) gauges, and after some water tests, we had to return to the shop and get Livorsi on the phone to recalibrate everything. For example, the engine trim height was limited because the gauge was reading off. After plugging in the laptop and some scrolling through features, we reset everything.
Was gusty out, but around 68 and my Merc guy did hit 69 on the GPS w/ a 25p. 3-blade Merc Tempest SS prop. I ran it to 65 on GPS @ 5800 RPM but was hitting the trim limit, which we later re-calibrated.
So, after lugging around a gigundous 502 block of cast iron in the ol' Scarab, the 300XS felt like it was like lightening -- Definitely a screamer. Just wants more and more RPM and the response is ridiculous.
Really crawled all over the boat. I was getting high smelling the residue from the construction. Nothing smells better than that smell with a whiff of 2-stroke oil (even though, honestly, I saw no smoke).
Maybe I will play with the jackplate on a nice warm, calm day and tweak an MPH or three from 'er.
Short video because I turned the camera off accidentally and never noticed (hard to at 65) and some pics (on the trailer again.)
Anyone looking to buy a fun boat that is a little more traditional than many of the boats out there now, keep Checkmate in mind. If you want your input when it is being built and like to customize your stuff, it might be the way to go. These high-performance outboards scream, and on cruise they are known to get as much as 6 MPG.
I need me some summer.
