I see last week the Cherokee Nation voted to expell all non blood Cherokees from the tribe, thus removing them from the benifits that most of the expelled wanted the MONEY. Good for them, maybe our country should look to the Cherokees for guidance, there should be no free rides. This great nation has for years let certain factions bully it into wrong decisions when it came to race issues.

Re: Cherokees Vote

Because there was much intermarriage between Cherokee and Americans of African ancestry, and I suppose some interbreeding without marriage as well, how are they determining who is "blood" and who isn't?

One thing that really annoys me is the doctrine in this country that if you have as little as 1/32 African ancestry you are considered of African ancestry, not that of the other 31/32.

Have the Cherokee adopted that doctrine?

The benefits that the Cherokee are receiving are compensation for the theft of their ancestors' land and the terrible deprivations they all suffered at the hands of the USA. Did not their slaves and tribe members of multiple ancestry suffer the same deprivations?

No the Cherokee hasn't but the Government has. I believe it is 1/8th. In the sixties I remember Buffy St Marie saying, eveybody claims to be Cherokee, there must have been one prolific Cherokee about fifty years ago.

The Cherokee Nation sided with the Confederacy during the Northern War of Aggression. As the result of being on the losing side of that conflict they signed a treaty in which they granted citizenship to their slaves. The situation now is will the Supreme Court of the Cherokee Nation rule that the treaty is binding or does their newly adopted Constitutional amendment supersede the treaty.

I agree with the 1/8. My ex is 1/16 Chippewa and not eligible for benefits. Her mother was, but never pursued any.

Is there a right and left wing in tribal politics? I'd say the righties won this round. ;)

What a colorful world we live in. You have white vs black, white vs red. Now red vs black. Everybody picks on poor unfortunate black. :( ;)

I see Al Sharpton is asking for a DNA test. Wouldn't it be ponderous if he and Strom were cuz's? :$

Re: Cherokees Vote

Let me play the Devil's Advocate for a minute.

The Cherokee Nation signed a binding treaty at the end of the Northern War of Agression in 1866 or so.

The CN then violates terms of the treaty and expells decendants of their former slaves.

The U.S. Supreme Court nor the State Department does anything to enforce the terms of the treaty of 1866.

Sensing the mood has changed states originally part of the Confederacy decide to void whatever part of the surrender document they find intolerable.

Just a random thought......
