Is it safe to explore the chesepeake bay in a 14' Deep V Lund boat?

well, a lot more people do it than you'd think. on a calm day, you'd have no problem. but the bay does get rough with high winds, and it would be a miserable trip at that point. if you stick to the rivers, i think you would have a good time. in either event, weather.com seems to provide a decent forecast for the bay. when they predict anything over 1 ft seas, i'd stay away with that boat.

Are you talking about the upper bay & it's tributaries or open the lower bay?<br /> <br />Like Matt said it all depends on the weather.<br /> <br />I've spent much of my childhood in boats like that on the upper bay. <br /> <br />Right now I have a 16' Tracker that I usually run around with near the Gunpowder, Pooles Island, Middle River area. <br /><br />It handles a moderate chop pretty well, but I don't usually take it out in the open bay when the wind picks up too much.<br /> <br />There are a lot of boat ramps in the rivers on the upper bay accessible from PA.

it ain't so much weather an waves but WAKES.. hellious wakes from all the boat traffic..they will run you down..

Good solid advice here.<br /><br />I started with a 15' Crestliner outboard. Lots of fun. Launched from Elk Neck State Park almost every good weather weekend for 3 years. No big problems but we really had to watch those wakes. We stayed mostly on the Elk and Northeast Rivers, with only one run to the Sassafras (it was a very LONG trip in that boat). <br /><br />We moved up to a 23 foot cuddy and the Sass was suddenly a short hop. The bigger boat made a huge difference in where we felt comfortable going. Baltimore, Annapolis, and Kent Island were all considered day trips from the Elk.<br /><br />The 14 footer is fine as long as you USE YOUR HEAD. And please take a boater safety course if you haven't already. I've boated for almost 30 years and took it again last year with my family (even though I already had the USPS course in 1987).<br />Good luck and see 'ya out there!

I wouldn't suggest it on the lower bay unless you have a perfect forecast. I get worried in a 18' deep V at times.I usally fish and boat around Hampton Roads Tunnel& the Monitor MerrimacTunnel, both can get nasty in a hurry.

hey ARKS.. the elk,northeast, an especially the sassafrass are my stompin' grounds..<br /><br />i put in at fredricktown on the sass.. one of the godgorious prettist rivers around.. <br />hole up in loyds creek alot..<br /><br />if'n you see me ,,give me a toot..<br /><br />i'm in the little pretty 16 ft. homemade center console skiff with a mohogany console with big windshield .. usaully doin' airborn stunts in the wakes.. i don't much slow down anymore..<br /><br />turn fear into fun..it's alot more fun..

Hey crab bait. I love the Sass too. My favorite river, hands down. We'll have to hook up sometime. I sold my boat (of 18 years!) just last weekend and only have a couple of kayaks and a SeaDoo for now . I have an empty slip at HdG Municipal Marina (Tydings Park), so we're looking for a convertible sedan at least 30'. <br />Rob

know an love havre de grace well.. i guess they got the boardwalk ( promenade ) almost completed since the bad hurricane..<br /><br />havre de grace is a nice town.. i camp out on garrett island in the summer.. an go party in town at nite..<br /><br />that sure is an expensive 'empty slip'..<br />i some catfishin' in that channel behind tidings park..

use to spend a ton of time on the sass. my father-in-law kept his 50' sportfisher at skipjack. nice river, but not much around.
