If it is EGR equipped, that's the first thing I'll look at. Just pull the vaccuum line off the EGR valve and plug the hose with a golf tee, then test drive it. If the problem disappears, replace the EGR valve or the EGR solenoid. Go after the valve first.

-dd-

I havn't had a chance to go out and work on the thing yet. new baby at home does make that hard...

Red, thanks, I'll check those bearings first thing, they gave me problems last year, was $1500 to replace, hope it's not the same this time.

Dogsdad, stock '71...maybe I'll ductape an egr to my muffler bearings and get 3 more mpg :)

Pull the distributor cap and check that the rotor will rotate back and forth. This will tell you that the mechanical advance is free to move.

Have had several that were seized in the full advance position and showed no power. If it is like that you will have to remove and completely disassemble the distributor to clean it up. Have also seen where the advance return springs were rusted to nothin and no hooks on em to pull things back to minimum timing.

JD

thanks pascal... I'm thinking the fuel filter and timing are my 2 things to check

have to pull the doghouse to check both of em anyway.

The distributer was a junkyard pull when I got the van 2 years ago to replace the points ignition, had pretty good parts, but havn't looked at it in 2 years.

other van shot craps this weekend, so guess I should get this thing running happy again.

ndemge, I was thinking that that year was somewhat prior to electronic ignition. My old K5 Blazer acted like that when the points dwell was closed up.

I was looking for my old motor manual to confirm that your van didn't have any of the pollution control crap. My wife sold it  She said she thought I knew everthing about trucks and sold it in a yard sale... :( Now she thinks I'm dumb again since I was asking is she knew where it was.

I'm pretty sure that your problem is the points. Should be an easy fix...unless you did switch it to electronic ignition when you got the junkyard unit.
