BBQ,

It's called a "jack shaft" set up. There is nothing mysterious about it.

You have a regular old run of the mill I/O hanging out the back attached to a regular old I/O engine placed amidships and connected by a "driveshaft".

In my humble opinion, you get the versatility of being able to lift the prop up for shallow operation boat balance of a true inboard.

The early models of these set ups were plagued with vibrations. The marine engineers decided to consult the automotive guys (who have been dealing with driveshafts for 100 years) and came up with a solution called-CV joints.

From what I understand, problem solved, ready for market. The only part in the entire set up that anyone would find unusual in a boat is the driveshaft and those are automotive components.

I've looked at two. One had a 4.3L V-6 and the other had MerCruisers new little 4 cyl. diesel.

djohn19,

then you are saying that this config. isn't a big mistake or trouble ... that is what I am wondering. I wish I had bought out my camera to take pictures -- well, all is done.

do you know what i shoudl look for when I am inspecting this boat for purchase?

thanks a bunch.

BBQ,

I personally don't think it would be a big mistake. As I mentioned, there is nothing really weird in the whole set up. Normal components arranged in a new style.

Four Winns wouldn't be fooling around with this if it didn't have some promise and merit.
