Chevy S-10 issues AGAIN!!!!

Okay, here we go again.
I have a 1991 Chevy S-10 and recently had the brakes done, rotors replaced, calipers and front shocks.
Here is the issue...same as before, but not diagnosed yet.
When driving, I can hear a clang clang rattle rattle, and a noise like your brakes are metal on metal. It is coming from the front passenger side.
I took it back to the people who did the work, twice. The first time they said that it was the front driveshaft that they replaced before. So they put another one in and the noise went away.
A week later the noise came back..same noise. So I took it back to them and they took out the front driveshaft...looked at everything they could, and then their final word to me after they put it back together was; It is the front differential bearing.
I took the truck home and there was no noise, it was gone. Well, today on my way to work, it started again.
So I pull over and put it in 4x4 and the noise goes away. As well, there is no noise when at a stand still, only when in motion(in 2 wheel drive, under load).
Does anyone know how hard it is too replace the differential bearings? I have the manual and it looks a bit complicated, but I think I can do it. I just want to make sure that that is the issue.
Has anyone ever had this happen to their truck?
The shop said they do not do this kind of work and that I have to take it somewhere else.
So what am I asking here?
Is anyone a front differential mechanic who can maybe help me out?
I hope so because I cannot afford to take it to another shop.
Thanks in advance.
B.C.

I don't know BC, carrier bearings don't make a "clang clang rattle rattle" noise plus I would expect that a bad CB would be more consistant in the noise/rumble/vibration? that it makes.

What is the slowest that you have heard the noise?

I had the CV joints replaced already. It can't be them.
slowest speed?......it starts around 5-7mph.
Oh wait, you said CB...did you mean CV or CB. Because I do not know what CB is/are.

Yes it can. Were they replaced with new or reconditioned? Some reconditioners aren't worth a pinch of Sh*t! I've seen innner races with the case hardening gone NOT replaced when reconditioned. A bad carrier bearing should be doing the "rumblerumble" dance, not clickity click. Take a look at the diff oil before you get involved in tearing it apart, look for grey floaties, that'll tell you if a bearing is failing.

I think boom was reffering to the Carrier Bearing not the Constant Velocity joint.

Aldo

Hay Chris I would check that the shafts have being torqued right to start with as instructed in your manual As Dunaruna says check out the diff oil it sometimes talks, even just the level. Here,s a link that may help in diagnose I believe yours is NP233 dif
http://www.differentials.com/tech.html

Re: Chevy S-10 issues AGAIN!!!!

So last night when I went to drive home, as soon as I put it in drive and started to go, the screaching/clanging noise started.
I had to drive 25miles in 4 wheel drive.
How bad is it to drive at 60mph in 4 high?
Is shook a bit, but the noise went away as soon as I put it in 4x4.
Thanks dolluper for the link. I will read it thoroughly, maybe it will help.

If there's no noise in 4wd... and there's noise in 2wd, I'd be checking the vacuum actuator to make sure it's allowing it to come fully out of 4wd.

Know what your outdrive sounds like when it's not quite in gear? Well, your carrier isn't a lot different. Just a buncha gears!

I dunno diddly squat about S-10 4x4s, so beg pardon if my questions is null and void, Bro Chris..

Have you checked the universal joints in the drive shaft between the transfer case and the front differential?...

Reason I ask is, I spent my afternoon chasing a similar noise and ended up finding the culprit to be the trans to driveshaft U joint.. Mine seemed to be causing noise at the passenger side rear wheel...

Re: Chevy S-10 issues AGAIN!!!!

Thanks keelhauled, I will check in the book to what you are reffering to. I have not heard of a vaccumm actuator.

snapperbait,
I had already taken it to tranny shop and the transmission is okay, the u-joints are okay too.
The tranny shop said it everything was fine with all that. Thanks for the input though.
I think I will call some friends and have them come over on Sat and see what we can find.
I do not think that this is going to be very easy to fix myself.
If we can't figure it out and no-one here can give me the help I need, I guess it is back to the shop. This time it will be a differential shop. I have spent SOOOO much money on this truck. I just can't afford to keep putting money into it anymore. And I can't afford to go and buy another used vehicle so I can go through the same thing.
thanks for input guys. Much appreciated.

Re: Chevy S-10 issues AGAIN!!!!

Well, apparently it is not the differential at all. I took it back into to Mr.Transmission and they told me it is the transfer case.
I have to take it back to them next week to get it fixed.
It is either the clip at the rear end of the transfer case or the fork just inside of the transfer case. They will not know until they take it apart.
2 1/2 hours to do the clip, or 5 hours to do the fork.
I told them that I have been driving it in 4high for the past 2 weeks. He said I should not drive it more than 10 miles at one time while in 4 high(and definetely not 60mph like I was doing).
I might have wrecked the gears now. It still seems to be fine in 4 high, but I have probably worn them down a bit.
He also said that if I had kept driving it in 4 high, I would have lost my 4x4 because the gears would be grinding and it would have worn them down to nothing.
So I guess it is going to cost me anywhere from $250-$600.
