Mid 80s full size 1/2 chevy suburban towing a 74 23' Mako, how can i stop the rearend from swaying right to left? It has the towing package, sway bar on the rear axle, new 31x10 tires, 50lbs in the back tires 45 lbs in the front, will new shocks help or maybe add a leaf spring? Its not all that bad, but if you had to steer quick it feels like it is going to take over.

Thanks for any info

There are a couple of questions to answer with this. Is your trailer level with the truck? I noticed that you said you had 31 inch tires on the truck. I'm not sure how tall the original tires were but if the 31's lifted the truck any that could make it slightly unstable by allowing the weight of the trailer to push up on the rear end of the truck causing you to lose some handling capabilities. How much does your boat weigh? Just because your hitch can tow 10,000lbs. does not mean that the vehicle can. Did your vehicle come with a tow package or did you just install a reciever hitch? A tow package also includes larger brakes for some vehicles so heavier loads can be controlled better. How fast are you pulling your boat? It could be as simple as not realizing how fast you are going. Finally are the boat trailer tires inflated properly? This could cause a lot of sway also. I hope this helps out.

Check the tongue weight, you may not have enough tongue weight. The boat could be riding too far back on the trailer, which can cause the occilation problems you are having. In extreme situations, too little tongue weight can unweight the rear wheels to the point of completely losing control. Too much tongue weight can push down on the hitch, unweighting the front wheels wich will result in vague steering. Check the tongue weight before you do anything else. Good luck...
