Chevy Vortec V8 question

Chevy offers a number of different small block V8 options for their full size trucks. The 4.8, 5.3 and the 6.0. My question is..... Will the same engine computer run all 3 engines? Say some one has a truck with a 4.8 liter in it and it flings a rod....could they put a 5.3 crate engine in the truck and not have to worry with changing the computer too?

can't say for sure about the chevy but with ford you can run a 5.4 with a 4.6 processor but would definately want a chip burned for it if you are willing to do a chip i wouldn't see why not

I haven't a clue, thats why posting here. My 2003 Z71 has a 4.8 liter in and at times its just a tad weak when I'm towing some things. I was really curious so if this engine dies for what ever reason if I could do a 5.3 crate engine with out much head ache.

Just a guess, but complete reprogramming would be required if it's even possible. I'll bet there's even more parameters than mentioned above. If not, then my hat's off to Chevy for making things simple.

Not sure if it would help your truck but my 5.7 is a pulling machine after i used a SuperChip tuner on it. It is set up for tow, performance and stock modes.I can change shift points, shift pressure and rpm limiter.Between that, new dual high flow exhaust and K&N air intake kit its a different truck..

The 4.7, 5.7, and 6.1 all have different pcm's in the dodge. Ditto on Gary about the superchips.

best thing for you to do is go to your local mechanic, one you can trust, have him find out if there is an updated prom for your computer . alot of times after a couple years of productions, they figure out they screwed up in some areas, such as pulling power, and they will update the prom. you mechanic can go on to "ALLDATA" and see if there was an update for your perticular vehicle, then he can hook his scanner up to your computer, enter vehicle and it will tell him your prom number that is currently in your computer, if its not the updated version, go to your local dealer and ask for the updated prom. you will be surprise at the difference the updates will make. this holds true with any make vehicle, but not all vehicles require an updated prom.

1996 and up vehicles have obd-2 computors,so if you wanted to have that engine in your truck, you would need to get the vin # offa truck, that is identical to yours, except that it has the size engine you want, then you can have your computor flashed or reprogramed, useing the vin from the other truck, otherwise it will not work.. you would have to have the vin#to load into the computor thats going to reprogram the pcm. obd-2 computors do not have a removable chip as a prom to make it fit other vehicles, that was obd-1 and ecm's,obd-2's has a program(software) and the right software has to be installed to make the system function. same as a driver for hardware in your desktop..

Ya know, if you are just sitting around waiting for an engine to throw a rod, you got problems.;)

talked with a chevy tech last night,he said it would switch fine but you would want to get a reflash from either superchips or dynojet to change the displacement or you can buy a programer from a speed shop that would allow you to do it yourself. his and my opinion would be have it burnt buy a performance shop

The 4L60E and 4L65E Trannies both have tow/mode switches, for undelayed shifts so less heat,5.3 285HP old 327 not much more than 4.8
