hello there i am now pulling my larson senza 210 lx br about 5000 lbs with a gmc sierra xtra-cab 4x4 w/ 5.3L v8. I am looking at getting a different truck since this one is an 01 and its getting tired. Just wanted some opinions on an 07 dodge 1/2 ton with the hemi, compared to a gmc 1/2 with the 5.3. For the same money i get an 06 gmc w/ 40,000 miles or an 07 dodge w/ 23,000. All opinons would be greatly appreciated because right now i am leaning towards dodge

Get a Ford, you won't regret it. but if I had to choose I would take the Dodge I have owned three and they are some strong trucks.

I second that motion. Buy a Ford F-150 no matter what. There's a reason they were the #1 selling vehicle in the world for 20 years running. Unfortunately, I own a Chevy Tahoe but dream of owning another F150 some day because they have never failed me. Let's just say I don't wear the pants in the family (otherwise, there would be a Ford in the garage, not a Chevy)...HA HA HA

sorry to hear this but i have never been a ford fan. I find them very rough riding uncomfortable seats and less power. Maybe i haven't driven the right one. The dodge with the hemi had unbelievable power and i was going to bring that home hook the boat up to it and see what it is made of. Don't know if the 20" rims will have an effect or not

I'm a Ford man, but I have a ton (3/4) of respect for my 2001 Suburban 2500. It is built tough. 180,000 (and counting) miles on the original brakes. But, most Dodge fans are for life. So, probably can't go wrong with either.

Dodge is my favorite manufacturer, however, Ford is a very close second. Ford is the only one to not ask for a government bailout (off-subject, I know). The rims shouldn't affect towing dramatically, and the Dodge is newer with lower miles, try an F-150 with the 5.4. I have an Expedition, '01, and I love it, 90K miles and never had a problem.

Ya know a few years back I went into a ford dealer and ask to see some 1/2ton trucks and the salesguy said that I had to take an IQ test. Wth? So I take their test and the same sales guy said I had an IQ of 117, hey thats great now show me the trucks. He said I'm sorry I cant do that your IQ is over 100 !!!! you better go talk to the Dodge guys :)

>>>>>>>>>> just kiding <<<<<<<<<<<<<<

I think you will find all 3 ford dodge and chev to be about the same, its your exp and taste that is different. When I was younger I worked in a parts store, every truck had its own set of problems. All 3 make good trucks buy what you like to drive.

And yea I drive an 04 dodge 1500 hemi :) but would be just as happy with a ford or chev.

buckw13 I have the 20" wheels and do just fine at about 4500lbs.

toyota is something to consider, they make great cars.
I would not go with chevy due to the fact that there had to be a reason why they went bankrupt.

Re: chevy vs. dodge

I wouldn't own a Dodge. We have one for a company truck (company leases them for 3 yrs). They have all been in the shop more than they are on the road. And when they are on the road, they won't break 14 mpg.

The definition of the word Dodge means; to avoid.... (pretty good advice IMO).

I wouldn't be seen in a GM.... not anymore.

Ford makes a good truck. I used to work on them for a living. I'm out of the auto industry, and when I left, I sold all my Fords..... and bought Toyota's.

Test drive a 07+ Tundra with a 5.7L. You will not be disappointed in the power. 4:30 gears with a 6 speed behind an engine that makes over 400 lbs feet of torque! These things haul butt.

OK. So we have suggestions for Ford, and Toyota and yet the original post asked about 2 specific trucks, a 2007 Dodge and a 2006 GMC. Well I will try to answer the original question. I have had Ford, Dodge, and GM trucks. Mechanically all have been fine and only required the usual things like brakes, tires, batteries, etc. I tend to keep my vehicles for a while and I also live in the salt belt of the midwest. The dodge rusted very quickly. Bottom of the doors were rusted out in a matter of about 5 years. The Ford wasn't too far behind that. The GMC I have now is a 2003 and so far so good. No rust except surface rust on the frame. The 3/4 ton GMC diesel I have now rides better than any either the Dodge or Ford, but it is also a short bed crew cab where the For and Dodge were regular cab long bed trucks. The Dodge and Ford were gas trucks so they can't even hold a candle to the Duramax diesel as far as towing. The Duramax also gets better fuel mileage (about 22 highway 18 over all). The Dodge was the worst on miileage at 10. It had a 360 in it. The ford got about 12 and had a 351W in it. Can't say anything about the Hemi or the 5.3 because I haven't owned either. Hope this helps.

Re: chevy vs. dodge

All is not well in the land of the rising sun.

Toyota Financial Services has requested a $2B loan from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation, a government-backed lending institution. TFS says it needs the money to cover the higher cost of borrowing in the US. According to Automotive News [sub], ?Toyota may be the first of a string of Japanese companies with high credit ratings to turn to state-backed loans prior to the closing of books for the business year at the end of March.? Toyota?s ?implied? credit rating based on credit-default swaps is considerably lower than its current Moody?s rating, as fears grow about liquidity problems across the automotive industry. The money will come from a $5B fund established by the Japanese government to provide liquidity for firms which operate abroad. These funds are said to come from Japan?s $1T+ in foreign cash reserves, the world?s second-largest foreign currency reserves after China. Nissan and Mitsubishi have also said they will apply for loans from this fund.

The Ford you describe is pre 1997. The 351 hasn't been produced since 1996.

It was a special low interest loan from the Japanese government. Its not a bailout, buyout, cryout. My wife works for corporate Toyota and I can't get into the details, but rest assured... Toyota isn't going anywhere.

Sorry. I see your point man. Keep in mind though, when someone seeks advice on a forum..... that people with experience in the subject might recommend something totally different. ;)

Yep. Never said it wasn't. For that matter the Dodge was even older.

Re: chevy vs. dodge

I've been pulling, riding up the sides of mountains on muddy rock filled 'roads" (trails) driving on the beaches in soft sand, pulling boats, hauling gravel and dirt, for yard projects, and so on... with the same 1995 Dodge 4x4 since 1997. It's had VERY FEW real problems, still starts great, doesn't burn oil and has around 220,000 miles onthe original, untouched engine. The only thing I can think of was recalled (and we missed the recall) and was a plastic fitting in the transmission line. We were on soft sand on the beach 20 miles from any blacktop roads and it gave way... dumping the transmission fluid on the beach and stranding us right there until the guy with a 4x4 wrecker could come and get us... Other than that, it's been a great vehicle.

Re: chevy vs. dodge

Chevy = Luxury Truck
Ford = Bragging Rights Truck
Dodge = Working Man's Truck

The majority of contractors I see are using Dodge trucks. Nothing fancy, but it gets the job done and adds to the bottom line in the long run.

If the trucks hold true to their lineage, one could say that the Chevy trucks will have the softest ride (except maybe Dodge's newest half-ton) and will nickel and dime you to death with little repairs. The Ford will have the roughest ride, but most are good trucks with a few lemons here and there. The Dodge will fall apart around you but generally keep on running.

I had a 1992 5.2L Dodge Dakota for a while. I sold it with 170k on it and only major problems were bad paint and leaking intake gasket (fixed with RTV and NO gasket). Ran 0w30 synth oil in Texas heat and changed it once/year, used about a quart every 5k miles w/ 170k on the odo. Got 18mpg in town and 20-22 on the highway, more power than I could use, and I could change all eight spark plugs in less than 10 minutes. Not a bad truck, but I never did too much towing with it. Now they are making the Dakota way too big and it has more problems.

Re: chevy vs. dodge

My experience has me agreeing with MrDancer in all points. My choices now would be between F-150 and Dodge 1500. So, to answer Buck's question that if it was only between those two then...Dodge. But I will look hard at the F-150 the next time I am ready to trade.

Anecdotal comic relief next...: A Chevy truck owner test drives a Dodge truck and comments about how it does not ride as smooth as his truck and how the dash is not as fancy, not as many options available, etc. The salesman apologizes and says "I'm sorry, I thought you were looking for a truck!".

That anecdote had a better fit in the pre-2009 days, the new Ram 1500 advertises that "it swallowed a luxury car".
