Re: chevy vs. dodge

Just a little update here. I ended up getting the Dodge. The thing pulls like a tank. Here in upstate ny pulling up to the finger lakes there are aolt of big hills. THis truck doesn't even blink at them. Pulls up the hills alot smoother and the tranny shifts ALOT smoother than the gmc ever did. The truck has every possible tow option i believe i could get. 3.92 axle, trailer tow, 6 spd tranny, heavy duty engine cooling, aux tranny cooler, heavy duty springs all around. It definately pulls the boat very well.

You will be very happy with that truck. I have a ram 1500 with the 4.7 it tows 7,400 pounds like a champ, though that's the max cap for weight. I also put an airaid TB spacer on it and boosted the MPG from 10 12 to 15 16 and highway 14/15 to 18/19 and added a little more throttle response while towing. 19.5 was the best I have seen with it unloaded on the highway.

I've owned 93 Ford trucks, everyone needed it's transmission replaced between 800-1200 miles. JUNK! LOL :D

Seriously, there is NO difference in the quality of the big three trucks, drive them, and buy the on you like the most. The guys tearing their trans up have no clue how to tow with an auto, operator error!

I can vouch for the Dodge trannies being crap, I've had four Dodge trucks, all 3500 4x2 models with the 46RE trans over the last 12 years, every one puked it's trans between 36,000 and 55,000 miles. The strange thing is that once they were rebuilt, they lasted just fine. The trans shop told me that they all had the same problem and Dodge never did a thing to correct it. It was something to do with the seals inside.

Started slipping in 3rd gear huh?

The newer Dodge units are better than the 46/47RE. I think you made a good decision with the Ford, the only better option is the Duramax HD IMO.

I actually tried a new Toyota between Dodge truck #3 and #4, but that was a sorry miserable mistake. It was a fully loaded Tundra 4x4. The trans died at 15,000 miles, then they said it was too new and they couldn't get parts, so two weeks later I finally got it back, then the motor died on the expressway, had to get towed, that took another two weeks, then the cd player and radio would turn off and on at will, the dealer never found the cause of that. The last straw after 8 months was the fuel mileage, which consistantly kept getting worse. It went from around 18mpg when new down to about 11mpg. That's even worse than my Dodge truck.
I finally bailed out and went back to a Dodge, which again, puked a trans after less than 2 years. I wanted a Ford at that time but couldn't make a deal for which I wouldn't lose my shirt in the Toyota.
None of these trucks ever towed anything larger than a small tinny or a 1500lb utility trailer.

I now drive a Ford, it's been fine so far. I still own the one Dodge, it's been 40,000 since it had the trans rebuilt. The Ford has over 165,000 and has never had any problems. It's better on gas than the Dodge but not as good as what I'm told the GM trucks get. Maybe next time I'll try a Chevy or GMC, but there's no way I'd buy another foreign p.o.s. again.

Wow... you sure drive a lot. With a little quick math you must drive 40K miles a year?...

I think most of your post is BS tho. No Ford will run 165K miles on the original DPFE sensor.... it had to be back to the dealer at some point.

And I doubt anything you said about the Toyota... you didn't say it, but if it was a Gen II Tundra the dealerships couldn't work on the new 6 speed when it came out. They could replace the TC (a few went bad) but Toyota wanted the tranny's back that had issues. I seriously doubt you had all these problems and Toyota didn't trade you out of it... a few phone calls would have got that done. Plus the Toyota's have the highest resale value (have for 20 years).... so the Ford dealer thing doesn't hold water either... my guess is you where so upside down that you couldn't get rid of it.

I agree! My current Dodge 3/4 ton(my 3rd) even has a 9'2" Boss V-plow on it. I do commercial/residential plowing. That's the worst thing for a tranny. I also pull a trailer full of lawn gear and my 2 boats. No problems. I love my Dodge(s). If you're nice to the tranny, the tranny will be nice to you...

Well, If you must know, I average closer to 65K every year, sometimes more. But I own and drive 7 vehicles on which mileage each year varies.
While I have not had to replace a DPFE sensor on any of my Fords since my 2000 Town Car, I somehow don't compare the failure or moisture contamination of a $67 part to a $2300 trans overhaul.

I buy all of my vehicles cash, I don't finance and have never been upside down on any of them, but I do have a pretty good idea of what is fair trade in value when it comes to buying my next truck.

Toyota was of no help, they sent me to four different dealers, none were any better than the other. They did do a complete trans swap but twice they opened the trans to attemp a repair which didn't work either. The first failure was in the planetary gears, which all but disintegrated. Mine and three others here that I know of had the same issues. My Tundra was a 2006 and I've never had a vehicle leave me with such a bad impression as that thing did.
I always pretty much favored Fords, but after that thing, I'd have taken anything just to get rid of it without loosing my shirt in the deal.
I had to trade way upward to get out from under it without loosing money.

From past experience, the only Ford trans I had fail was one in my 1990 TC which lost OD at about 165K, it cost me just over $1000 to replace with a factory reman unit back in about 1996. Other than that, other than routine brake pads, rotors, and tune ups, the Fords have been great.
My current Dodge with it's 5.2L Magnum has had the intake resealed, new timing cover gaskets, and a transmission within 80,000 miles.
I have to consider the Toyota a failed experiment as it never became a reliable truck for me. At least the Dodge has now given me nearly 40K of reliable miles with no more issues. I could never feel that way about my Toyota.

Everyone one of these threads turns out like this, a bunch of tall tales and people recommending what they drive. Boooring.
