Anyone have any experience with these supposed cleaning logs.My wood stove is an older one which burns less effeciently which in turn keeps the chimney cleaner and I also make an occasional paper/cardboard "Hot" fire to keep things clean.I dont have much chimney with the stove being on the second floor and my attic that it goes through not being high.I was going to burn an occasional "cleaning"log for maintenance.Charlie

Jeez Charlie,..... Didn't you Just have that Smokepipe in your hands the other day,..???.....
Did it look like it was loading up with Cresote,..???...

That's what those cleaning logs are for,...... The smoke from them causes the cresote to dry out,+ flake off, falling back into the firebox.......
If you're not burning Green Wood,... You Probably Don't really need to waste your money on them.......
But,.......
If it makes You Feel Better,..........
Go Ahead,....... It Won't Hurt a Thing........... ;)

I use a big old length of chain, climb up on the roof and drop it in the chimney, rattle it around for a while - jobs done.

Like my neighbor used to do, just cut up and toss in the Chrismas Tree after New Years. Dat'l take care of the creosote. :D  :p

Yep, and they got away with it for several years. My first Christmas in the hood, I heard this noise like a saturn rocket taking off. I looked a few doors down the road and there was a blue flame shooting out of this two story chiminey.

I started to go for the phone and another neighbor said that ol' Deans did that every year. After a serious talk with 'ol Deans, he no longer practices that method of chiminey cleaning. (thankfully)

Yes Bondo, but I almost had it in my hands.I was going to replace a section of it and it just wasnt worth the effort.I put a small patch on it where mates up with the stove.I saw the logs in the store the other day and became curious.I never burn green wood but you can never be too careful.Charlie

I recently read somewhere that those creosote removal logs you burn in your chimney are not good for the chimney and add salts that further deteriorate your flue and damper. I just read this last week but I can't remember the source.

You were correct CC. The dried Christmas tree burns so hot that it will ignite the creosote inside the chiminey flue. Once that ignites, it burns like rocket fuel, it will burn the mortar out of the flue and flames will escape into the house structure.
