I agree completely. The only problem is, now that same product is being made by a worker who makes 5 times(at least) the wage as the overseas guy. What do you think is going to happen to the price of that product? There lies the rub.....

Our complacency and our false belief that the Chinese products are inferior is what has helped this giant come to be a world power. China is capable of competing with anyone on quality however it is us Americans that demand low cost products so the Chinese are more than willing to fulfill that market.

Their QUALITY is poor . Haven't you been hearing about the lead based paint on toys being sent over here that poisons our children ? Or the milk products that were tainted , for their own consumption .

Some of the stuff they make is junk, but you get what you pay for no matter where it's made. Whether it's paint or milk or what ever, when a buyer wants something at a particular price, you get what that price will offer.

This is going to be closed real soon, I can feel it in my veins.

How many people here actually look at where a product is made and make an attempt to purchase: Made in USA, even if (more than likely it will be) costs more.

Sometimes it is not even possible to do. When every option to buy an item is not domestic, it doesn't help the cause.

Even long time American companies aren't.

I definately look at where it's made and if given a choice get domestic.

It is my understanding that the U.S. Government subsidizes local companies for each job that is sent out of the country . This should be STOPPED IMMEDIATELY ! !
Actually US companies receive government backed guaranteed loans. If things go south the company does not lose any $$$.

Exactly the problem. Most people don't see long term and don't really
understand what happened. And compounding the problem the more
their wages drop the more they shop for the cheapest price.

This is mostly our own fault. Less then half of those eligible vote and
many that do are not educated voters. Thus because we apparently
don't care, our governmental policies are not enacted in our favor.

I drove past Foxconn each day on the way to the toolshop I was at on my last trip. It is considered "not a good place to work" by the locals.

ME To, Rather have "Made In U.S.A." on it.

Last year we were shopping for kitchen furniture and went into one of the very well known stores in the US. Those that live near the border shop there because they are very well known and the prices are half of ours here in Canada.
Anyway, we tell the salesman what we're looking for and as my wife looks around he tells me they get lots of business from Canadians, and he brags about their furniture's quality and that's it's all made in the USA. My wife decides she likes this "island" and we put it in the truck. All wrapped in cardboard and they shrink wrapped it because it was winter and snowing.
When I took it apart at home I turned the table top upside down and what did I see......Made in China.

It's as well made as anything I think we could make....it's really just a table & chairs.

Every tool I own is "made in U.S.A." Never owned an imported car, never will.
It annoys me to no end that my computer is imported.
I pay more for my american made stuff and I have no problem with it.
Knowing I have helped another american keep their job is all I need to know.
As stated before "you get what you pay for."

I feel the same way but are products made in USA REALLY made in USA? I used to work at a factory that made transmissions for the US truck industry. We also had a factory in Brazil that we transferred this operation to. THE TRANNYS WERE 100% BUILT IN Brazil, shipped to north Carolina, tested and then we riveted a metal tag on them stating they were made in USA!! I own an American car but the electric steering assembly is made in China! I found out that most other parts and assemblies are made offshore with just major assembly being in America (which can be loose for North or South) I will not stereotype a country....I think both China and USA are CAPABLE of quality...it depends on the company not the country.

Made in USA or Canada will never be an actual. What it would cost to have a product actually made would be so prohibitive, the consumer would freak.

To make a simple toaster in North America, would have to be sold at more than $100.
Not to bash unions, but that's why there are no more manufacturing jobs.

Everyone seems to be saying the same thing; that they would pay more for U.S. goods; but then they would want a cost of living increase. We all want to make more and pay less. Most of you hit it right on the head. Government regulations, frivolous lawsuits, and union demands are sending jobs overseas. You can't make higher wages and produce goods that cost less. You can't sue or strike and expect a company to survive. You CAN regulate an industry out of business. You can't play innocent in a country that supposedly has a government by the people. Get out and vote; and more importantly; write to your representatives and remind them that they are supposed to represent you.

We would never accept the standard of living they have in China. It is awful to actually see it in real life when over there. Hardly surprising that most of them would leave to live in another country if they could.

What pure hogwash! Typical labor in China manufacturing is paid 50-75 cents an hour by the better employers. There is no way you will ever get Americans, union or not, to work for that sort of wage.

Yeah I gotta agree here. They live in dormitories at the company and work 12+ hours a day for pennies. It's not like American's make $15/hr and Chinese make $2/hr. It's way more ridiculous than that. Course now India is taking work from China cuz they'll work even cheaper.

Yes. Company I work for are looking at India as an option for tooling as well right now. My neighbor's company was recently bought out by an Indian company and he is currently over there I believe training them to "take his job eventually" Not a good scenario for him.
The dormitories at the shop I was recently at in China have 1 room, 2 sets of bunk beds and 8 people living in each room. 4 sleeping and 4 working. At the end of the shift they switch places !!!! the bed never really gets cold !!!

PGFISHER your right on.

A few of you missed the point imho.

If you get rid of the bulls**t of doing business in the USA some of the manufacturing jobs would come back. It wouldn't be union wages but they could pay $10-15 an hour and still make the same profit they are now paying "slave" labor wages.

Any of you ever read The Fair Tax Book by Neal Boortz and Congressman John Linder ?

Where I live their would be 500 people filling out applications for 100 such jobs.

This is the way it should be. Calm, relaxed, on topic discussion without side tracking to "other" issues :)

Re: China vs. US made

In a global economy, the way it is supposed to work, each country produces what they are best at producing, export those things, and import what others are best at producing.

In an ideal world, it is a tide that lifts all boats.

Obviously, it is far from an ideal world, and it won't be an ideal world any time soon, but the reality is we are never going to manufacture toasters or TV's and be gobally competitive any time soon.

The key is to identify those things we are competive on, and concentrate on them. What we have is the potential for is innovation, and we have the advantage of having world class research and development potential in virtually every state with our University system that is unmatched in the rest of the developed world.

Now that may take some investment, and will certainly take an emphasis on education, but the opportunity is there if we chose to take advantage of it...
