It's still an American company. The proceeds (profits) go here, not there. Labor is a very small part of the total cost of the engine.

I'd rather buy something from an American company assembled somewhere else than something from a foreign company assembled here.

The transplants here, have everyone believing they are an American Co. Wrong. The profits go overseas.

Obviously, it would be best to have everything here.

The Mercury 40 - 115 4 stroke engines are made in China, the engines smaller than 40 hp are made in Japan in a joint venture with Tohatsu. The Verado and Optimax engines are made in Wisconsin and MerCruiser engines and drives are made in Oklahoma.

Its the global economy at work I guess.

This may be true, but they are exporting your job. It doesn't help anyone if the American owned company is building everything overseas if all their customers, Americans, are out of work and can't afford to buy the goods.

Keep the company in the country as well as the profits. The company employs its customers! Why do so many companies miss this crucial economic fact?

This all applies as much to Australian companies as well as American companies.

I would prefer to buy Australian made products over products made by an Australian company overseas! I am then satisfied that I have done my bit to keep my friends in jobs... How do you feel about your friends?

Re: Chinese Mercury?

The Mercury 30 and below are Tohatsu engines that are manufactured for Mercury. It is not a joint venture. Mercury and Tohatsu do jointly own a real estate company that owns the land and building. Tohatsu then leases that building from the jointly held company. Mercury frequently publishes press releases that refer to the "joint venture" but, its pure subterfuge. Mercury really wants to hide the fact that they re-label Tohatsu engines. Tohatsu also sells other larger size engines to Mercury, but they are not imported to the U.S. market.

I agree as well. The sorry thing is that Mercury is the largest selling outboard in the world!

Re: Chinese Mercury?

I posted about this about 2 years ago when Brunswick opened the 30 MILLION dollar Chinese manufacturing facility. wonder how many construction jobs and support jobs as well as factory positions that facility would have created in Wisconsin?
however its kinda like the no warrenty POS 2006 ford ranger I bought new in nov 06. 70 % or so of it was manufactured overseas.
its mostly just assembled in the US.
not that you can get Ford to honor any of its warrenty, neither the defective front end,the tires it took out to the sticky drivers side window to the cheesy plastic tail gate opener that breaks.
next truck will be a good ole US manufactured Toyota.

Re: Chinese Mercury?

If figures...the worst merc ob engine is made in America and their best is made offshore. Anyway, China's labor costs went up 35% and their wages went up 15% in 2007. If that rate continues it won't be too long before China's labor costs as much as USA labor. If the EPA stays off the backs of USA manufacturing facilities we might be seeing motors made in America again.

Re: Chinese Mercury?

and a job there with good benifits means you get half a day off on sunday and a cup of fishead soup and rice at lunch.
try looking up labor laws and lbor benifits in china.
its spotty but best I can tell if a worker gets his hand caught in a machine and chops it off not only can they be fired but also charged for any damage to the equipment and safty laws are rather lax.
as much as I used to cuss OSHA and the EPA and a few others its what seperates the US from that.

It ain't just America... It's most of the rest of the world. Certainly true here in Australia too. Even our orange juice and garlic are grown in China :mad:

Re: Chinese Mercury?

If you stop and think about it, post war production went to Japan following it's rebuild. Then Hong Kong, then Singapore, then Korea, then China and now India is gearing up as are some of the African countries. In every instance the initial shift of production turned out some really bad products. We are seeing that now in the Chinese made products. However, trends tend to make a full circle. It didn't take long for some call center re-locations to be re-located back here. It just depends on the industry. As for outsourcing -- one needs to look at several aspects of American business to understand why that happens. When companies are paralyzed by labor laws, foreign currency manipulation, taxes, insurance, pensions, and health care costs to name just a few things, the only alternative is to cut the costs of production. We can manufacture products just as good as the foreign competition but they can do it cheaper. Which product do you think the consumer will buy with all else being equal? The days of highly paid floor sweepers is over. I know I'll catch a ration of cxxp for saying that but put yourself in a business owner or corporate execs shoes. What would you do? Leave the highly compensated exec salary out of the discussion. That's negotiable and you would be no different if given the opportunity. We are in a global economy but half the wage earners in this country don't understand that, won't cross train, and therefore end up on the slippery slope to welfare or taking jobs that pay less only to have the cycle repeat. Anyone with a brain that's been layed off should be learning to speak Spanish or Mandarin, Hindi, French, German or any other language. Interpreters make darn good money. All it takes is a little thought and a little drive! Just so you know, i've been let go twice, never missed a day of work because of it because I cross-trained and kept abreast of the economy and what was going on in my field. My wife and I both retired early. I started an "S" Corporation for a little "fun money" and now wish I had done it sooner. As they say -- "Lead, Follow, or Get out the way". The American worker has options, they just don't or won't do anything to help themselves but would rather ***** to the government and hope they help them out.
