The problem is quite simple. It's the fact that publicly traded companies have to be constantly growing to keep the investors happy. No longer can a shop just manufacture a product year after year and be content to turn a modest profit. They have to make more and more profit every year and that mean slashing costs. I hope I live long enough to see the jobs start to come back to the US when chinese costs get too high.

Ya' know - Merc signed the contract with the Chinese just a year AFTER they had slapped the Japanese outboard makers with a class action lawsuit- said they were "dumping" product in the U.S. for less than what they sold it for in their own country...go figure

Dude, what are you babbling about. I'm talking about the rules of the forum, not international politics.
Besides, I don't "Oppress" anyone, I might lock the thread for forum rules violations, but would never "Oppress" anyone. :)

Actually he is retiring, he came out of retirement seven years ago when he was offered the job and now he is ready to return to retirement. I for one think that he ran the company when Mercury came out with some of their biggest model changes and improvements. Sure, I love Mercury products and it does anger me that they would go and open manufacturing facilities in China and Mexico when they could put Americans to work but you do what you have to do to be competitive and please both the stockholders and Brunswick itself.

I thought politics was the idea of different people offering different views about the same subject.
You know... sorta how both republicans and democracts both have their ideologies about society, government, actions, practices, policies etc...

So if that is true. We on this board are certainly all different people. But we all have the same view, about the same subject. And that view is on the subject of that most stuff from china is of substandard quality.
If we are not argueing because we have the same views about that subject, then how is it political??
I don't get it.

I heard he is a really nice guy and now is as good a time as any to "retire". I think he just came on two or three years ago and Mercury certainly stopped screwing things up(industry wise) when he did.

Re: Chinese Mercury?

I've got a couple of friends at Merc and I was told by 1 that 192 folks were laid-off after the second quarter last year...141 gone after the third.
One of the fellows I talk with on a regular basis has been there 24yrs and was moved from the outboard division to the "ATTWOOD" division of products. I was told flat-out the outboard division was in trouble and the only division at Merc that was supporting itself and showing a reasonable profit is the Racing division (ProXS engines and racing props)....a part of the company that looked to be doomed with EPA regs coming up. They combined some tech from fuel delivery of the opti's and came with an engine that will make the cut with the EPA and still has some power.
They had to make this move as he said the projected sales of the Verado were about half of what they had planned for and as of about 2 weeks ago, he said there was no data showing an upward trend in the purchase of these engines.
He kinda made a funny out of this by saying..."when your 75hp 4S weighs as much as a V6 200 2S, there's an obvious problem"..
I own a Merc, an older one, but I won't slash-out at any particular engine they have built in earlier days...mine has been a good one, but the only reason they are on their feet today is by buying every boat manufacturer they can and sell said boat with their engine.
I have asked several boat dealers about getting a certain boat without the engine...all answers have been the same...buy it as is and sell the engine, then put what you want on it. Obviously they are depending on getting every engine they build, out into the consumer market, period.
Personally, I don't care for the tactic, and I think the retiring CEO may see this as one issue that has helped him make his decision to get out now.
